A Scentless Place Is a Half-Finished Story…

Some memories return and make themselves felt not when we close our eyes, but when we pass through a scent. The sense of smell is so powerful that humans can perceive approximately 10,000 different scents. Scent, known as "fumum" in Latin, means "smoke" in everyday usage. The word "perfume" is derived from "per fumum," which means "entirely volatile" in Latin. Scent, which is also an important communication tool in the world of living things, serves as an excellent signal. Living things, from plants to many other creatures, communicate through scent, coming alive with the secret language of the cosmos.

The pure and clean scent of soap lingering from freshly dried laundry on a summer evening in childhood… Or that familiar feeling of slight dampness mixed with wood that hits you when you open the door of an old house… Scents are an excellent communication tool between space and time. It is the oldest teaching of remembrance.

Designing a Moment You Will Remember in the Future

Neurologically, scent directly connects to the memory and emotion center of the brain. A perfume, a cologne, a candle, or a room fragrance carries not only the present moment but also layers of the past. Of course, the main issue here is not just science. The issue is how one touches upon the biophilic memory and archive within oneself.

A scent placed in a space actually determines how that space will be remembered in the future. Scents carry meaning in every way. They are a brand, a logo, a description. The scents used in stores and various environments demonstrate this to us. Scent designs allow visitors to form a mental and sensory connection with that space. They achieve this through scents. That's why when you light a scented candle, you are not only designing your room, workplace, or environments, but also a moment you will remember in the future.

Scent as an Identity: The Signature and Identity of a Space

Everyone can have a style. They can create it for themselves in a very simple way. However, very few people have a scent. This is because scent emerges as one of the strongest expressions of identity.
Like a person, a space should be recognizable and, most importantly, memorable later on.

Let's remember the words of French fashion designer and founder of the Chanel brand, Coco Chanel: "A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future..."

This assertive statement is also valid for spaces and living areas today. A scentless space is an unfinished story. When a house, an office, or a store has its own scent, that place ceases to be just a space and transforms into an experience. It becomes one of the most important components of brand integrity. Consequently, people always remember the experiences they have had.
